A guide for Rider parents and families
As your student embarks on their college journey at Rider University, your support remains essential in helping them navigate this exciting transition. This guide provides key information on Rider’s academic, social, emotional, and health resources—ensuring your student thrives in all aspects of college life.
Navigating the transition to college
Starting college is a significant milestone, and your guidance can make a lasting impact. By understanding Rider’s available resources, you can play an active role in their success while empowering them to take charge of their own experience. Here’s how you can help:
- Encourage self-advocacy and independence: Guide your student in problem-solving rather than stepping in to resolve issues for them.
- Promote campus engagement: Involvement in clubs and organizations helps students build connections and feel a sense of belonging.
- Remind them about Rider's resources: Encourage them to seek academic support, counseling, and health services when needed.
- Promote healthful habits: Emphasize self-care and maintaining a good routine with a balanced diet, exercise, and adequate sleep.
- Check in without hovering: Maintain open communication while allowing your student space to grow and become independent.
It’s natural to worry about your student’s well-being, especially when they’re away from home. If concerns arise:
- Encourage your student to communicate with you directly and remind them to seek support from campus resources, including the Counseling Center, Academic Success Center, Health Center, Residence Life staff or their professors and advisors.
- If your student wants you to be involved in their academic progress, suggest that they sign a FERPA release.
- If you believe your student is in distress and may need additional resources, contact the Dean of Students office at 609-896-5101.
