There’s no better way to learn about a graduate program than by hearing from a student themselves. Our ambassadors can answer your questions about Rider, the application process, admission process and program curriculum. They can also share their own personal experiences about life as a graduate student at Rider.

How did you know you wanted to study in your chosen field?
One of the most influential people in my adolescence was my middle school counselor. When I needed support, a safe space and an advocate, she was my lifeline. I saw her as a positive role model and still to this day am so grateful that she was able to guide me through the most difficult years of my life. Her approach was warm, nonjudgmental, and authentic. As I gained my own strength and resilience, I saw myself being in her role for others one day, using my own experience as a catalyst for my career. The impact she had on my life was immeasurable and I feel honored that I can be that source of hope for others in the way she was for me. I started my journey at Rider in 2018 for my undergraduate degree in psychology with a minor in gender and sexuality studies. I felt that I was destined to be a licensed professional counselor which led me to an early admission into Rider’s Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. I started the program during the fall of my senior year.
What is the most influential piece of advice you’re received or the most impactful experience you’ve had during your time at Rider?
During my first semester, the faculty made sure to emphasize the importance of the self-reflective work that would be required and encouraged throughout the duration of the program. In nearly every class, we prioritize turning inward. With this willingness, vulnerability and humility, we will be better counselors and better human beings because of the deep sense of self we have gained here in this program. I am so grateful our program at Rider values this inner reflection, as I have developed into the best version of myself throughout my time here.
What excites you about your field of study?
When thinking about my future as a licensed professional counselor, I feel excited to see my clients find their life worth living and build resilience through our work together. I strongly believe in evidence-based practices and look forward to using these therapeutic interventions to support clients in finding joy, freedom and happiness. I fully believe recovery is possible and I feel honored that I will be a part of so many people’s journeys! To see small wins and transformations in clients is the greatest reward as a therapist. I can’t wait to open my own practice one day, as it is one of my biggest life goals.
Is there anything else you want to share with future students?
As a new student in the program, it can be very overwhelming and also very exciting! Here are some short words of wisdom that helped me to stay present, calm, and confident in my work.
1. You are exactly where you are supposed to be.
2. Be patient when becoming someone you haven’t been before.
3. The portal to your best self is through the parts of yourself that you avoid.
4. It is so valuable to say, “I am still learning.”
5. Be happy with what you have while working for what you want.
