Telephone numbers in the United States consist of a three-digit area code, a three-digit exchange code, and a four-digit subscriber number. If you are making a call to a number within your area code (e.g. 609), you only dial the seven-digit phone number (e.g. 921.7100). However, when you are making a call to a number outside the local area (a regional or long distance call), you must first dial "1" + the area code and seven-digit phone number.

Telephones in the Residence Halls
Telephone access is available in all residence halls. You will be assigned a phone number when you move in; however, you must provide your own analog telephone. Telephones can be purchased inexpensively. Telephone access is provided through your Technology Fee. Telephones in residence halls include local, regional, and long distance charges. They do not include international calls. Pre-paid calling cards are a convenient way to control long-distance telephone bills. Rates for calling cards vary, so ask other international students for recommendations. Pre-paid calling cards are available at most convenience stores or can be purchased on the Internet.
Visit the Office of Information Technology Telephone and Voice Services section to learn more information about using phones in the residence halls.
Telephones at Off Campus Residences
If you want to install a telephone line in an off-campus apartment, follow these steps.
- Local and regional service is provided by Verizon. You will need to call 1.800.755.1090 or 1.800.755.1077 to arrange for this service. They will provide your new telephone number. You will be asked if you would like to have long-distance service as well (long-distance service is not a requirement, but you will have the option to choose one if you wish).
(Note: As an international student with no credit history in the USA, you will be asked to pay a deposit of $100.00, refundable at the end of one year or at the end of service.) - Long-distance calling services are available through several major telecommunications companies. Major providers include:
AT&T 1-800-222-0300
Sprint 1-800-777-4681 or 866-304-6820
Verizon/MCI 1-800-427-9977
Long-distance companies may offer special packages for international students, so compare rates carefully before making a choice. If you are sharing a telephone line with roommates, decide together what services you need and make arrangements accordingly. You may be charged an activation fee to begin service. You will be billed each month for basic local telephone service and long-distance services.
