Student Employment: Student FAQs

Undergraduate and graduate students can search for and apply for jobs via our career platform Handshake. Federal work study students also apply for jobs through this platform.

Incoming Fall/spring students will have access to Handshake when classes begin.

All students working on campus must complete the I9 work authorization before they can begin working. This is completed after a student interviews and is hired for a position. It is completed once every 3 years.

For I-9 approval, students can bring in:

  • US Citizens
    • US Passport
      OR
    • Driver’s License/Permit + Social Security Card
      OR
    • Driver’s License/Permit + Birth Certificate
  • Permanent Residents
    • Permanent Resident Card
  • International Students (all of the below)
    • Social Security Card
    • Foreign Passport
    • I-20
    • Most recent I-94

*Documents must be presented in person and must be original. No scans or copies will be accepted per federal law. For other document options, please check out the USCIS I-9 acceptable documents page.

The Federal Work-study program is a need-based component of most financial aid packages through the FAFSA application. With work-study, you are awarded a dollar amount that you can earn through working at an approved job on- or off-campus.

To identify if you have work-study in your financial aid package, look at your financial aid award on My Rider. You will see a dollar amount next to Federal Work Study.

Student employees can work up to 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. This limit encompasses all positions you may have, so even if you have multiple jobs on campus, the most hours you can work in a week total is 20 hours.

A student is required to take an unpaid break or lunch of at least half an hour after six consecutive hours of work.

Most job listings will specify what you should submit as part of your application, typically a resume and a cover letter.

All application materials must be approved by your major’s career coach before you can apply for positions. Your application will not be submitted if you have unapproved documents. You can make an appointment with your coach via Handshake.

Students are paid biweekly for the hours reported on their timesheet. We recommend all students to submit a direct deposit form to [email protected].

Student employees earn sick time and are eligible for workers compensation. For every 30 hours a student worker or Graduate assistant accumulates, they are eligible to take one hour of sick time. You can begin taking earned sick leave 120 days after your first day of employment. At this time, no vacation hours can be accrued.

On-the-Job Accident or Injury Reporting University employees are covered by Workers’ Compensation Insurance. Under Workers’ Compensation laws, employees receive payment for required medical expenses and lost time due to injuries that occur on the job. Any on-the-job accident or injury must be reported promptly to the immediate supervisor first, who in turn should report the accident/injury to Human Resources. Serious accidents/injuries requiring immediate medical attention and/or public safety response should be first reported to the Public Safety, 7777 (emergency number)

If a student is working off campus, they cannot continue working past their award and must immediately stop working. Student employment will email the student and off off-campus supervisor when you are approaching your limit.

If a student is working on campus and is approaching their award limit, they may continue working, and their checks will be compensated from the department's budget.

Any unused funds will be returned to the federal government and will not roll over to the next academic year.
