2022-23 Tournaments
The newly formed Rider Mock Trial Team got its first taste of actual completion in November of 2022 by participating in two invitational tournaments, the Scarlet Knight Invitation hosted by Rutgers and the Pirate Invitational hosted by Seton Hall. For first time efforts, the 2-6 ballot scores were not surprising though the team performed well. And Bella Frost and Diorys Jimenez each took home trophies as Outstanding Witness’s.
The team worked very hard to improve, and on February 4, 2023 they traveled down I-295 for a scrimmage against the University of Pennsylvania A team, and while the scrimmage was not scored by judges, they more than held their own and came away with new feelings of confidence, believing that they could go up against any team and “survive”.
And then over the weekend of February 18-19 they competed in their first AMTA sanctioned tournament, Regionals hosted by Princeton University, and it was at Regionals the Rider University Mock Trial Team shocked the world of collegiate mock trial by compiling an incredible 7-1 record, including a 2-0 sweep against the top seeded team in the entire tournament. This qualified them to move on to the Opening Round Championship Series. At Regionals, Competition Captain Cam Curnuck received 19 rankings out of a possible 20 as an outstanding attorney and Emily Paruk also ranked highly and took home a trophy as an Outstanding Witness. Bella Frost would have also taken home an Outstanding Witness award but for some confusion on the part of one of the judges.
