Broncs Go Green
Rider’s sustainability initiatives are coordinated through the office of Sustainability Management, staffed by a Manager and supported by a team of EcoReps on both our Lawrenceville and Princeton Campuses. The existence of this office sets Rider apart; at many colleges and universities, sustainability is a diffuse initiative. Having centralized leadership for these projects represents our substantial commitment to “going green”. The office seeks out ways to make the campus more economically, environmentally and socially sustainable, through both investments in infrastructure and activities that encourage behavior change in community members.
The work of the Office of Sustainability ranges from dollar savings and energy reduction to increasing awareness through online applications and social media. Many of the stops on this tour would not have come about without a consistent voice at the table prompting planners to consider how to make initiatives more sustainable. Because we are all supported by and impact the environment, the Office of Sustainability prioritizes informing and influencing Rider students during their time here.
Education programs from this office are aimed at reducing use of energy, water, and limiting our solid waste stream. These include a Green Film and Speaker series, a sustainability module for Freshman Seminar, Residence Hall Programs, competitions such as RecycleMania and Battle of the Buildings. The office also sponsors many events, including Campus Sustainability Day in the fall, Earth Day in the spring, and monthly info sessions. The goal of these initiatives is to influence Rider community members to be better stewards of the planet.
