Community Gardening
Founded in June 2011, Rider’s Green Acres is an organic community garden that focuses on connecting the Rider community through educating the campus about sustainable agriculture hands on. Located by the front gate, between the Joseph P. Vona Center and Alumni House, the garden is managed by a Garden Team, as well as many volunteers and directed by Dr. Laura Hyatt. The garden offers many opportunities for students, from volunteering, to researching and interning. The garden produces a organic fruits, vegetables and herbs that include varieties of leafy greens and summer vegetables. Participants gain a wealth of information about food production and its impact on the environment. A blog is available to keep patrons updated on the garden’s progress.
Sponsored through the Energy and Sustainability Steering Committee, Student Affairs, Facilities Management, and Ortho-McNeil Janssen, the garden is able to give away its produce free of charge; instead, they ask that patrons serve in the garden in exchange. The food is given away at weekly giveaways for the campus community. Giveaways begin around mid summer, on Thursdays at 11:30am until the available produce is all given out. A second garden is located on the Westminster campus as well and a garden cookbook may be purchased to help fund the garden projects.
