Though your student is away at college, we know you will continue to play an important role in their life. We recognize that the path to college success and graduation looks different for every student. With this in mind, we hope you find this list of frequently asked questions helpful as you gather information and guide your student if they need assistance.

How is my child doing?

If you are concerned about your child’s well-being the Dean of Students Office is happy to assist. First, ask your child if they want to have a conversation with you before reaching out to the Dean of Students. Once you have identified your child’s areas of concern, we can assist with identifying and connecting your child to the service or office on campus that is best suited to address their needs and concerns.

Rider University also offers free and confidential Counseling Services to all currently enrolled, full-time and part-time students. For further information, please refer to the Counseling Services page.

Is Rider a safe campus?

The safety and well-being of all members of the Rider community – students, faculty, staff and visitors – are of utmost importance to the University and a primary responsibility of the Department of Public Safety.

The Public Safety Department provides members of the University community with a safe and pleasant environment in which to live, learn and work. The Department is responsible for the protection of life and property, the enforcement of University policies, the prevention and detection of on-campus crimes and other violations, emergency response management, and other safety services.

We encourage you to explore the Public Safety Department’s web page and review the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report to learn more about what Public Safety has to offer on our campuses.

Who can assist my student if a roommate conflict arises?

Living on campus can be one of the most rewarding, engaging and academically beneficial experiences of college. Our Residence Life staff welcome contact from parents and family members who have concerns about their students’ adjustment to on-campus life. Visit the Housing & Dining page for more information.

Who should my student notify if they are going to miss class?

It is the student’s responsibility to inform instructors of the nature and extent of an actual or anticipated absence. If that is impossible, or if the absence is or will be more than three (3) consecutive class session (seven (7) calendar days), the student should contact the Office of the Dean of Students at 609-896-5101. Then the dean’s office will notify the appropriate faculty member.

What should I do if my student does not seem to be connecting on campus?

Clubs and organizations play an essential role in the vibrancy of our community at Rider University. The Campus Life Office oversees more than 150 student groups and hosts many events each year so that every student has opportunities to meet new people, expand their skills and have fun. Students who feel a sense of belonging are more likely to earn a degree, and many make friends and find their lifelong passions by getting involved on campus. To explore Rider’s active community and learn more about campus activities and organizations, visit Activities & Organizations.

Where can my student find tutoring, writing skills, study skills or other academic support?

The Academic Success Center offers Rider University students free programs and services designed intentionally to maximize student involvement in their own learning and development. Our staff works collaboratively with students to discover options for creating academic and personal success. Visit the Academic Success Center for more information.

Are their student employment opportunities available on campus?

Whether they are looking for an internship to hone their skills and build their experience or a job that lets them put their skills and talents to the test, Career Development and Success is there to support your student throughout their time at Rider from the first year through graduation. Visit Career Services to see the robust set of career development resources and services available to your student.

Can my commuter student buy a meal plan?

Rider's food and dining services are operated by Gourmet Dining Services, LLC. Our food service venues provide you with virtually unlimited access to a wide variety of food choices seven days a week! Having a meal plan lets you grab a meal with your friends, when you want it and where you want it. We have a variety of meal plans that fit into your schedule and provide an assortment of high-quality choices, with something for everyone!

For more information about meal plans, venues, hours, and menus visit the Rider Dining website.

What programs and services are available for students who commute?

As a commuter, your student is among the estimated 1,000 students who live off-campus. We hope that during your time at Rider you will choose to get involved with the numerous clubs, organizations and activities on campus. The Association of Commuting Students is a great way to get involved as they advocate for off campus students and recognize the unique needs that commuter students have. Whether you live two blocks, or two hours from campus, we are dedicated to supporting your student experience as a Rider Bronc! To learn more, visit Commuter Resources.

Is there a campus shuttle or other transportation that my student can access?

Yes, the University operates a free campus shuttle. Please refer to our Transportation page for more information on shuttle services and other available transportation options.

How can I get more involved on campus while my student attends Rider?

Play an active role in your student's education by joining the Parent and Family Council. Members of the council will become more knowledgeable about University resources and programs that support student success, meet and build strong connections with Rider administrators, parents and families, and create a deep connection to Rider by attending campus events, volunteering, and supporting initiatives that benefit current students.
