Applying for an Undergraduate For-Credit Internship or Co-op

Experiential learning opportunities, such as internships and co-ops, provide students with valuable pre-professional work experience in the business world. These hands-on learning experiences help students develop practical skills and gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a part of the workforce.

Undergraduate business students have the option to receive academic credit for participating in an internship or co-op. Of the 120 credits required for graduation, students may take up to two credit-bearing practical training experiences, with a combined total of no more than nine credits.

Students interested in earning academic credit for their internship or co-op experience must follow the application instructions below.

Students can find internship and co-op opportunities through Rider Handshake, Rider career fairs, faculty recommendations, departmental clubs and organizations, professional associations, and online job searches.

Once students secure an internship or co-op, they may follow the steps below to apply for academic credit.

Instructions to Apply

For students interested in earning academic credit for their internship or co-op experience, the first step is to consult with a faculty sponsor. Refer to the table below to identify the faculty sponsor for your program.

During the consultation, students should provide:

• A job description outlining the duties performed and a brief description of the firm.
• An offer letter specifying the start and end dates of the experience and the number of work hours per week.

Once the faculty sponsor confirms that the experience qualifies for academic credit, students must complete this survey to begin the registration process.

Required Attachments:

• Job description and offer letter
• Assumption of Risk (AOR) Form (required for all off-campus positions, whether in person or remote)

All required documentation must be submitted for approval.

Approval Process

Once the survey is submitted, the application will be reviewed and approved in the following order: 

1. Faculty Sponsor
2. Department Chairperson
3. Associate Dean: Dr. Lan Nygren, [email protected]

After approval, the application will be forwarded to the Registrar’s Office for processing.

If the faculty sponsor, department chairperson, or associate dean has any questions regarding the application, they may contact the student via email.

Once the internship is officially registered, students will receive a confirmation notification from the Registrar’s Office.
