The Gurwitz Family Scholarship assists lacrosse student-athletes
by Diane Cornell
Rider alumnus Alan Gurwitz ’71 has pledged a gift that will establish a scholarship to support lacrosse student-athletes at Rider. This is the first donor-supported scholarship funded for the team, which began its inaugural season this month.
“Alan was one of the first people to reach out to me after I was hired,” says women’s lacrosse Head Coach Evan Mager. “We have a strong connection through the love of lacrosse, and I am very grateful for his constant support. His commitment to the start of the lacrosse program has been amazing, and is a powerful example of the role alumni can play in the development of our students.”
Alan Gurwitz is the president of TSC Textile Sales & Consultants, Inc., in Plainsboro, New Jersey, a fabric supplier consortium for homes and businesses. A longtime donor, he has also generously given to the men’s and women’s basketball teams, student scholarships and the Annual Fund.
His latest gift was inspired by his time growing up on Long Island, New York, where lacrosse is a prominent sport. When Rider announced last summer that women's lacrosse would be the University’s 21st NCAA Division I athletic program, Alan knew he wanted to offer his support.
“It’s a great way to support the dedicated student-athletes in the program and to feel connected to the sport as an alumnus,” he says.
The first Gurwitz Family Scholarship will be awarded in the 2024-2025 academic year.
