When you’re choosing a graduate program, we think it’s important to hear about it from a student’s perspective. Our ambassadors can answer your questions about Rider, the application process, admission process and the curriculum. They also can share their own personal experiences about life as a graduate student at Rider.
Meet our ambassador
Lisa Stokley, talent and organizational development concentration, class of 2026
How did you know you wanted to study in your chosen field?
I have always enjoyed helping others and working with people which led me to a career in human resources at a large manufacturing organization. I had a positive working relationship with the regional manager of human resources and admired her ability to develop strong strategic goals and overcome organizational challenges. As I evolved in my career, I realized I needed to find a program that would enhance my leadership skills so I can learn to lead individuals, groups and organizations effectively. I chose this program because the curriculum provides foundations of leadership, financial management and conflict management, as well as teaches skills I can apply directly to my career.
What is the most influential piece of advice you’re received or the most impactful experience you’ve had during your time at Rider?
Dr. McKinney, the director of the organizational leadership program, empowered my classmates and I through her knowledge, flexibility and kindness. She taught us that success does not come easy and it will be a challenge, however, these challenges should not stop us from reaching our goals. She encouraged us to come talk to her or any of the other faculty members if we are ever feeling overwhelmed. This showed me how approachable and encouraging professors at Rider are. As an ambassador, I want to be able to provide prospective students with the same compassion and understanding that was provided to me. Although pursuing a master’s degree can be challenging, Rider offers a large support system of faculty and students ready and willing to help you work towards your goals.
What excites you about your field of study?
As a natural-born leader, I have always had a passion for helping others and providing recommendations to improve business processes. I see organizational leadership as an extension of business that can be applied to a variety of different industries and life situations. I have learned many valuable skills in this program including how to manage conflict, motivational tactics, budgeting and more. I am excited to continue to cultivate these skills and become an effective leader.
How do you feel you’ve grown in your field of study since coming to Rider?
Since coming to Rider I have learned essential leadership skills that will help me grow in my human resources career. Through my current and future coursework, I am building a solid foundation of organizational structures, strategic planning and financial planning that I will need in order to partner with other leaders and build a successful organizational structure. The skills I am learning can also be applied to situations outside of the workplace. I am more confident in my abilities to develop strategies within the workplace and able to provide educated feedback for advancements and improvements within organizations.
Is there anything else you want to share with future students?
A master’s degree in organizational leadership will provide you with the foundation and credentials needed to unlock higher-level career opportunities. The program is designed to help you develop your own leadership style, hone your communication skills, make informed decisions and much more. Having a master’s degree will set you apart from others and show employers that you are dedicated to learning and advancing your skills. Throughout the program, make sure to build relationships with faculty members and other students and never be afraid to ask questions. Learning is challenging but it is also very rewarding.
