Dr. Larry Newman, former dean and longtime faculty member, died on Aug. 29. He was 71.
“This is an enormous loss for the Norm Brodsky College of Business and the Rider community,” says Dr. Eugene Kutcher, dean of the Norm Brodsky College of Business. “Larry has positively influenced the lives and careers of thousands of Broncs. He possessed a strong leadership approach, a sharp sense of humor and a fierce dedication to our students.”
Newman has been a member of the Rider community since 1984. He held a number of positions in the Norm Brodsky College of Business, including serving as dean from 2004-12, as chair of the Department of Marketing from 2001-04, as a faculty member and as a member of numerous advisory boards. He most recently served as an associate professor and as co-executive director of EXCEED (Rider’s Executive Center for Education and Development). EXCEED offers customized consulting services and executive education for businesses and government organizations throughout the region.
During his service as dean, the College completed two successful AACSB International maintenance of accreditation reviews for both business and accounting, established five Centers of Excellence, built two international partnerships, launched highly relevant new programs and revised all of its curricula.
He was deeply committed to higher education, serving on the Bucks County Community College Board of Trustees from 1990-2007 with two years as chair. He was a member of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges Council of Board Chairs, a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Graduate School Alumni Society of Penn State University and an active consultant on strategic planning and marketing to higher education institutions and businesses. Newman also served as a member and president of the Neshaminy School District Board of Directors. At Rider, he was awarded two summer research fellowships and a Davis Fellowship.
Newman earned his bachelor’s and doctorate from The Pennsylvania State University and his master’s from Drexel University. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he resided in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and Lawrenceville, New Jersey, much of his adult life.
Newman is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years Dr. Cynthia Newman, professor of marketing at Rider University, sons and daughters-in-law Matthew and Jessy (Hughes) Newman and Jared and Erin (Paukert) Newman, daughter and son-in-law Jenna (Newman) and Peter Renaud, son Zack Newman, and grandchildren Gwen, Sarah, Will, Charlie and Alice.
