Renovations part of campus master plan to include more housing variety, gender inclusivity
by Rachel Stengel '14
The next phase of residence hall renovations are in progress with Kroner Hall under construction until this summer. The complete interior remodel will feature an array of new housing options and gender-inclusive bathrooms.
All rooms in the building will receive new furniture, flooring, paint, lighting and individually operated, energy-efficient heating and cooling systems. The C wing will be completely redesigned as suite-style housing. Each suite will be home to four students with their own shared bathroom. Common area spaces throughout the building will also be renovated.
"The goal is to continue to upgrade student housing and provide more amenities," says Mike Reca, vice president for facilities and university operations. "This phase of the renovation will create more opportunities for student housing besides the traditional double room."
The A and B wings on all three floors of the building will replace existing shared bathrooms with multiple, private bathrooms, each complete with a shower, toilet and sink. These bathrooms are part of the Division of Student Affairs strategic plan to include more gender-inclusive amenities throughout campus. They will also benefit all students by providing additional privacy.
"We want to create more inclusive spaces so students of all gender identities and expressions can feel safe and secure on campus," says Dr. Leanna Fenneberg, vice president for student affairs. "The creation of these gender-inclusive bathrooms also removes the questions or stigma about those using the bathroom, as they will be used by every resident."
So far, Gee, Wright, Ridge, Hill and Ziegler Halls have been renovated in accordance with the Facilities Master Plan. In fall 2017, Gee Hall reopened to students after receiving a complete interior renovation, while Wright and Ridge Halls reopened in fall 2018 after similar work. The next phase of residence hall renovations will take place this summer with renovations in Lake House and the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority house.
