Honors Program in English
Qualified majors may apply for honors in their senior year. A student must have a 3.25 cumulative average and a 3.5 average in English. Upon approval from the English Department, a candidate for honors enrolls in ENG 497: Advanced Study, writes a thesis, and submits it for departmental approval. The student must achieve a course grade of B+ or better to graduate with honors in English.
Awards
- The James A. Morgart Family Scholarship Endowment is administered by the Office of Financial Aid in collaboration with the Development Office. This renewable scholarship supports English majors with financial need and a minimum 3.0 GPA. All students who meet the criteria and complete a FAFSA form are considered.
- The Paul C. Sherr English Prize is an annual cash award for the graduating English major with the highest cumulative average.
- Writing Awards: An annual contest for best critical essay and creative writing in Rider English major courses. Entries by faculty nomination. $100 prize in each category.
- Writing Contest for Secondary Students: Annual high school writing contest sponsored by the Rider English Department with publication opportunity in "Venture" and cash prizes in essay, short story, and poetry. For information, contact contest director Dr. Robbie Clipper at [email protected].
