Find your path

Rider recognizes careers don’t follow a single path. Our post-baccalaureate teacher certification programs are designed for career changers as well as recent college graduates who have not completed a formal teacher preparation program. Students in our programs benefit from small class sizes, hands-on experiences and supportive faculty. With our flexible and affordable part-time format, you can pursue your education on a schedule that works for you. We also offer a 2-year NJ Alternate Route program for students already on their way to a career in teaching. Credits from the Post-Baccalaureate and NJ Alternate Route certification programs can be applied to the Master of Arts in Teaching degree.

Which program is right for you?

Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification

This program is for individuals who are interested in teaching, and have completed at least a bachelor’s degree. Those who are interested in secondary education should have completed coursework in a specific content area, such as Biology, English, or Social Studies, whereas those interested in teaching in an Elementary or Preschool setting should have a background in liberal arts.

2-year NJ Alternate Route Teaching Certification

This program is for individuals who have obtained a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) through the NJ Department of Education, have attended a 50-hour pre-professional CE program, and have been hired as a full-time teacher by a New Jersey public school based on their CE. The school district must then agree to enroll the individual in Rider’s 2-year Alternate Route program as part of the Provisional Teacher Process.

Post-Baccalaureate2-year NJ Alternate Route
  • For individuals who have a bachelor’s degree in a non-teaching related area and are looking to change careers
  • Offered part-time
  • 21-24 credits (can be completed in as little as 3 semesters, excluding summer)
  • For individuals currently employed as a teacher by a New Jersey public school
  • Offered part-time
  • 27 credits

  5. Submit the online graduate application for admission to Rider*

*Applications may be submitted prior to completing testing requirements

Key Steps

  1. Obtain a CE for the subject/grade level you wish to teach
  2. Secure a contract to teach
  3. Have your hiring district agree to enroll you in Rider’s 2-year NJ Alternate Route program for your educator preparation program
