Coach Jason Brown will appear Sept. 23 in virtual event open to the public
by Adam Grybowski
Jason Brown, who gained national attention as the head football coach of Independence Community College on the Netflix documentary series Last Chance U, will be a featured speaker in the 2020 Business of Media Lecture series at Rider University on Sept. 23 at noon.
The topic of his lecture is "The Growth of Unique Sports Content on New Media Platforms.”
Brown grew to prominence following his larger-than-life role in Last Chance U, a series that turns a spotlight on the hustle and grind of junior college football, with players pouring themselves into their dreams for gridiron success and a brighter future.
Brown was featured in two of the show’s seasons. Since then, he has cultivated his own successful media platform and business as a coach and mentor, offering camps and clinics through his website therealcoachjb.com. Brown has also published a book and he hosts his own podcast, in addition to releasing his own brand of whiskey and cigars.
“Netflix catapulted Brown into a new role he probably never could have achieved as a football coach alone,” says Dr. A.J. Moore, an associate professor of journalism. “Learning more about he embraced and elevated his new role through the savvy use of media is going to be eye-opening for students and the broader community.”
The Business of Media Lecture series is made possible through the generous support of Rob Hagedorn ’81. It is also supported by Rider’s Center for the Business of Media.
Previous presenters have included editor-in-chief emeritus of Essence magazine Susan L. Taylor, Silicon Valley visionary Jaron Lanier and Comcast Senior Executive Vice President David Cohen.
"The Growth of Unique Sports Content on New Media Platforms" will take place virtually on Sept. 23 at noon. Registration for the event is requested by visiting www.rider.edu/events/business-media-lecture.
