Dr. Peters' scholarship includes African American literature and folklore, nineteenth century American literature and multi-ethnic American literature.
In 1995, Dr. Peters received the Teacher Appreciation Award from the university's Office of Student Support Services. A recipient of NEH and Ford Foundation postdoctoral fellowships in past years, Dr. Peters was recently selected as a participant in the Asian Studies Development Program hosted by the East West Center and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Dr. Peters has published articles and has presented numerous scholarly papers on the life and works of Zora Neale Hurston. She has also contributed scholarly articles on African American literature to The Oxford Companion to African American Literature and The African American Encyclopedia. She is currently editing for publication in 1998 by Garland Press a critical study of Zora Neale Hurston entitled The Assertive Woman in Hurston's Fiction, Folklore and Drama.
