Dr. Sheena Howard's ‘Remixing Colorblind’ was screened at Rider March 28
by Alexa Caplinger ’16
All members of the Rider community are invited to a viewing of Remixing Colorblind, a documentary written, directed and produced by Dr. Sheena Howard from the Department of Communications. The film will be presented on Monday, March 28, in the Bart Luedeke Center Theater from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Remixing Colorblind is a complex study of higher education and how it shapes our perceptions of race. The documentary embarks on examining how the educational system today shapes our understanding of race and, by extension, the nuances of race relations – including notions of implicit bias, individual racism, institutional racism and reverse racism.
"I am thrilled that Dr. Sheena Howard's film Remaking Colorblind will have its campus premiere at Rider University," says Dr. Anne L. Law, Special Assistant to the Provost and Professor of Psychology. "Dr. Howard interviewed many Rider students, and their stories form the backbone of the film. Rider is a vibrant and diverse community and this is an opportunity to consider the impact of race on student experiences on campus. I am looking forward to an engaging evening."
Remixing Colorblind presents an exploratory journey to viewers, challenging and encouraging them to critique the ways the educational system has shaped their notions of race and influenced their relationships with “others.”
Following the film, Gabrielle Magwood, the Student Government Association (SGA) Diversity chair, will interview Howard and conduct a question and answer session for the audience.
In 2014, Howard broke barriers when she became the first black female to win an Eisner Award, which is considered the Oscars of comics, for her first book, Black Comics: Politics of Race and Representation (2013). She is also the author of Black Queer Identity Matrix (2014) and Critical Articulations of Race, Gender and Sexual Orientation (2014) and contributes to a number of news outlets, including the Huffington Post.
Remixing Colorblind premiered on Feb. 25 at The Landmark Theatre, Ritz at the Bourse, in Philadelphia, Pa.
This film event is brought to campus through the collaborative efforts of The Office of the Provost, SGA, and the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
